Tourist (L) Visa Application

Visa Office of the Chinese Embassy is only responsible for Diplomatic, Service, Courtesy visa application and Visa-exemption Certificate. Chinese Visa Application Service Center is responsible for visa application of L-tourist, F-business, X-study, Z-work, G-transit, C-crew, and D-permanent residence.

Getting a Visa in Visa Center

1. Tourist (L) Visa Application

You should submit your visa application to the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in person. If you can not submit the visa application by yourself, you can entrust someone (relative, friend, or a travel agent) to submit on your behalf. Before your submission, you must make an appointment online before submission of your application to the Centre. Post application is acceptable. Postal application is accepted.

If you are planning to tour Tibet, you should contact the Tourism Administration of the Tibet Autonomous Region (Tel: 0086–891–6834315; Fax: 0086–891–6820410).

Documents Required

  • For individual: A neatly filled out L visa form, passport (with at least 6 months validity and at least on blank visa page), and a 2 inch passport style photo. Applicants are planning to tour Tibet should provide a visa notification form which is issued by Tourism Administration of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
  • For group tour: A visa notification form issued by authorized travel agencies in China, a name list of the members of the tour group, original passport of each group member and a photocopy of the information page of each passport and a letter (including the group number, total number of group members, contact person and the itinerary of the tour) issued by the travel agency which organizes the tour.

Fee and Payment Method

The total amount of the fees to be paid by an applicant is visa fees adding application service fees. Cash or debit card can be accepted but postal applications fee is paid by debit card only. If you prefer to have your passport returned by post, an additional service fee of £15 (exclusive of VAT) will be charged. If you do not provide a prepaid Royal Mail special delivery return envelope, the visa centre will provide one with £6 (exclusive of VAT) postage charge.

Processing Time

  • The regular processing time is 4 working days (e.g. submission on Monday, pick up on Thursday).
  • Express service is 3 working days processing (e.g. submission on Monday, pick up on Wednesday). Please note that express service is only available to those customers who submit applications to the visa counter before 12:00 at noon, Monday to Friday.
  • Group visas will be ready for collection 5 working days after submission.
  • There is no same day service or next day service.
  • Postal applications will be processed and returned within 5 to 14 working days on the condition that the documentation is in good order and no further requirements involved. The Centre is unable to provide express services for postal applications.

Visa Pick-Up

You should pick up your visa on the pick-up date specified in the receipt. The receipt must be presented.
