Why do Chinese hotels ask for large deposit?

Hello there! I have my holiday in Beijing now. There is one question that i don't understand. Why Beijing hotels ask such a large deposit upon my  check in ? Is this normal in other places?

The deposit should range from RMB 100 a night to RMB 800 per night. Hotels in Beijing demand the highest deposits. The deposit can be paid in cash or by credit card. The hotel will process the credit card transaction and then process a credit at check out. A receipt is issued for cash deposits and it is necessary to present the receipt to obtain the refund of the deposit.

Hi, I ve been traveling for many years to China, and you need to know something about deposit at check in.

1. be careful, if you paid the room in advance. Usually when you provide a credit card number to hotels in China during your reservation, they use this number and charge or at least freeze the amount of money for the first nigth in your credit card. Then when you arrive to the hotel, they process the transaction and charge the amount for the first nigth. But, if they freeze money for 2 or 3 nigths more, your money is still frozen in your account.

2. they will ask you , for a large deposit at check in, in 5 stars hotels, they charge " as a deposit " about 1000 yuans per nigth.

3. When you check out, they ask you, to give again your credit card and they charge the total amount spent during your stay. But they dont do it , as off line transaction to use the previous number authorization gave it from your bank, they charge new transaction as sale, and then after 5 o 7 work days, they cancel your previous deposit.

Suggestion: is much better if you have 1000 yuans in cash, to give them as deposit, they will refund this at the moment of check out, this way you will avoid troubles if you are planning to spend some weeks in China, because they are not " playing" with your money.
