11th, October, 2001, Sideng area in Shaxi Ancient Town was added to the World Endangered Architecture list by the WHY.

Shaxi Ancient Town is located at the southwest of Jianchun, to the southeast of the Three Parallel Rivers scenic area. Shaxi is a tiny town ringed by tree-clad mountains on side sides. It is characterized by verdant forests, pristine waters, multi-featured landscapes and historic relics. Cangchang River flows south to north through the town. The town covers an area of 25 square kilometers and is home to the Bai, Yi and Lisu ethnic people. It's a land of affluence and has integrated the enchantment of exquisite mountains, tranquil waters, ancient pristine town and the graceful manner of the local girls.

Shaxi is soaked in ancient culture and remarkable local tradition. The history of the town can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Periods over 2,400 years ago. This fact is evidenced by the ancient tombs in the Ao'fengshan Mountain and the bronze mine ruin in Huacongshan Mountain to the east of Shaxi Town. As early as 400 BC, a bronze metallurgy base centered on the Heihuijiang River appeared and skilled technology was applied. Shaxi was one of the birthplaces of the bronzeware culture in Yunnan province.

Shaxi served as a vibrant trade post on the Tea-horse Route during the Tang and Song Dynasties. Caravans carried tea, salt, along the rugged, mountainous path to Tibet and brought out horses, fur etc from Tibet. Shaxi bore witness to the many tragedies and comedies occurring along this aged route to generations of merchants.

The town is clustered with ancient traces such as ancient temples, theaters, shops, which were built to cater to the passing caravans. These aged ruins together with the local's traditional lifestyle also evoke a feeling of the town's glorious past

Shanxi is in the middle of the country while Dali is in Yunnan province which is located in the very southwest of China. The distance between the two places is really long and may take one or two hours at least by air. But if you want to take a train, then time would be long enough for you to have sleeps.

Sorry that I take Shaxi as Shanxi. Shanxi and Shaxi are not the same places. I checked it on the internet but without finding a satisfying answer. It seems that the town is in Anhui province which nears Shanghai. Anyway, it's a beautiful town worthing visiting.

Good luck.
