Travelling back from Xi'an to Shanghai over 7 days

Hi there
I'm going to be in Xi'an for 3 weeks in October this year (volunteer work) and plan to travel to Shanghai over 7-10 days before returning to the UK.  I would quite like to be able to go via train and be able to jump on and off it at various points along the way.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Can you get just 1 train ticket and use this?
Can anyone suggest a bit of an itinerary ?!
Any help, advise or suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks

Hi, Fazzer,
You got a very great idea for your travel, but it makes you tired.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Yes, it is possible.

Can you get just 1 train ticket and use this?
No, you have to buy many train tickets. I'd like to recommend you take bus. It will be more convenient.

Can anyone suggest a bit of an itinerary ?!
Xian-Weinan-Huashan-Sanmenxia-Luoyang-Yanshi-Gongyi-zhengzhou-Kaifeng-Shangqiu-Xuzhou-Fengbu-Nanjing-Zhenjiang-Changzhou-Wuxi-Suzhou-Shanghai
It means you have to buy a ticket from Xian to Weinan, jump off, and buy a ticket from Weinan to Huanshan, Jump off, go on and on like that.
It seems very interesting because you have lots of experience by doing that.

Good luck!
