I have had personal experience with this. You will required to apply for an extension or a new visa and pay a large fine dependnding on the length of time that you overstay. It can take a number of days to have the visa extended so further travel plans can be affected and it can cost money for more hotels etc. I also found that officals were not very co-operative.The best thing to do is to get an extension before the visa expires and save yourself a lot of hassles.

I heard that you will have to pay 200yuan (around US25$) for every "expired day" with a max 5000yuan(around US600$)  per person. So, if your visa has expired more than 25 days, than, you don't have to worry about paying more fine. But, make sure to stay in small or private hotels, because big hotels will only allowed to host those travelers whoes visa has not expired.

You are recommended not to overstay the duration of the visa or to apply an extension as soon as possible if you really want to stay longer, otherwise you will risk being heavily fined and find yourself a lot of trouble.

It should not be such a big hussle to have your expired visa extended. It usually not a big problem to get one visa extension for additional two weeks to a month. some information on how to have an visa extension is provieded as below:    you should submit your extension application as well as the required documents to the local Public Security Bureau 7 days before the expired date of your visa.   Foreigners who want their visa to be extended should provide the following evidential materials: 1. One's valid passport and visa 2. A full complicated application form for extension 3. proper reason for the extension 3 Multiple visas can not be extended. I have a double entry L visa on a US passport.  I want to stay 41 days before my first China exit.  Should it be easy for me to get an extension when I start my trip in Shanghai?  Anyone know what the fees are?

The L visa held by visitors could be extended once with the duration no more than 1 month; L visa held by family visitors could be extended three times with each duration under 3 months.   but for the fees, I have no diea.
