Guilin is regarded as a safe place to travel for both men and women, however female travelers are sometimes more likely to encounter harassment, but uncomfortable situations can often be avoided by taking the following precautions.
Dress conservatively. Although short skirts and tank tops may be comfortable, they may also encourage unwanted attention. Avoid walking alone late at night or in questionable neighborhoods. Do not agree to meet a person whom you do not know in a secluded place.
Be aware that some men tend to mistake the friendliness of foreign women for romantic interest. Be wise and it is unlikely that you will experience any difficulty.
I live in Guilin, it is definately safe to walk on the street even at night, they city does not sleep until 11pm at night, many people are still on the street....even though we don't recommend you intentionally to explore small lans and streets at night, bad people may grab your bag or other valurables.
I have been in this city for many years and am living in a community which takes about half an hour by bus. Sometimes I left home without locking the door (just because I am tooooo forgettable) But when returning home, everything would still be safe and sound. What’s more, I am someone who loves to be alone once in a while and sometimes just walk back home by myself after one day’s work. You know I am at the present a guide and has always to be with my customers until very late. But I had never never put my safety on the list …For many times on the way home at one or two o’clock in the morning you could still see the slim ladies walking on the street with their bags. Nothing happens!
But this never shows that we do not have any safety problems. On the contrary, you do have to attention when you are walking on the street, especially in the evening. Well, you know it’s a commercial time now, and China is no exception. Again, take Guilin for example. In Guilin, there are always people on the street trying to speak with the tourists and claim that they are able to give your money the best value. They are so eloquent that you do not know how to respond (smart ones just walk without responding) and at last jump into their trap. These people are always, although not all the time, money-oriented. They first give you good impression and then seemingly reasonable explanations. But when you offer to continue to the best, you would have to pay unexpectedly high price!
