We have been reading in the guidebooks about the Li River trip from Guilin to Yangshuo. The guidebooks mention that due to low water, in winter months the boats cannot travel all the way from Guilin to Yangshuo. What is the likely routes? English speaking guide available? How far in advance should I book? Transfers from and back to the hotel available if I book the cruise? Any suggestion are appreciated.  Jean

Dear Jean, What you've heard or seen about the cruise does not occur each winter only when drought comes. So...you don't have to worry about it too much. If it happens to be, visitors will not miss the highlights of the cruise either. The most attractive parts of Li River is from Xingping to Yangshuo and you will get board right there.

English speaking guide is available on boat and they have a good master of it. Other languages can not be guaranteed. How far in advance to book? My suggestion is book it when you decide to go. It is not expensive itself, so it is hard to wait for a deal on it. Paying in advance means you will have a guranteed seat which is more important in the peak season(Big festivals, summer or winter vacation for the students)

Transfers? No. You have to purchase separately. However, large companies like China International Service Guilin set up offices on all the major roads. Please find the sign CITS and they will offer you transfers from hotel to the prier and back from Yangshou. Need packages include Li river Cruise, China Highlights Travel with its Head Office in Guilin can be of great help.

Usually, they start your cruise in guilin and end it at Yangshuo, for approximate 80 kilometers. but in water-short autumn and spring periods, your cruise will be shorted to the Yangdi-Xingping, a part of the original cruise. Actually you still can enjoy highlights along the river including the Langshi Scenery, Nine Horses Mural Hill and Yellow Cloth shoal and much more. And travel there in low season(winter is considered low season there) will cost you less but may be a little cold.
