Shopping for jewry and silk in China?

I will be in Beijing and Shanghai briefly and would like to buy some necklaces, bracelets, silk etc, at reasonably priced rather than expensive gold stuff. Can anyone recommend a market, shop for these - or are they available everywhere? Someone has told me the best place for silk is Suzhou, some 2 hours away from Shanghai. Is that true?
