WOW! Chinese people really like food, especially soup!

It is my first time in China and I am very supprised at the ammount of food chinese people eat and yet stay so fit and slender. I mean, everyday I go to eat at restuarants and order just one or two dishes and a soup for myself and it is more than a whole family could eat! The soup was especially big! I could not even eat the entire bowl even if I tried! I feel so bad about wasting food, and I tried to finish everything I order, but it is too much and in the attempt to eat it all I have gained about 5 kilos in the last 6 days! Can someone help explain to me how the chinese do it or any eating or ordering tips.  Please help!

sincerely,

Getting Fat and Full in China

Sharing the food with your frieds would be the best way to solve this question.

Chinese people can eat a lot but not everybody. You may have seen some of the people order a lot and only try a little bit. It is a shame. For your question, try to explain to the waitor you are alone when ordering food. Some of the restaurants have both big and small dishes especialy soup and rice. Enjoy your stay!

How do you gain 6 kilos in five days? It is amazing. As far as I know, Chinese food contains the less fat. What do you usually have in these restaurants? Please try to see what the Chinese People have next time and you will know the secret. Have fun!

Well, I must second the first response.  Chinese people share food, this may be an alien concept to North Americans ;) jk/   That weight gain in such a short time span seems rather inplausible, unless you are taking creatine and 'roids hehe, or weighing yourself with brass in your pockets...  haha but yeah, many dishes are designed for communal eating.

Well I feel like a complete fool. It all makes sense! Chinese people share their food! ha ha ha, I grew up in a big family so I am not use to that. If you were late to dinner you did not eat! ha ha ha. Also, I am embarrassed to admit this but after I posted the last post I realized that I had wieghed myself with small backpack on. I feel so embarrased. I have actually foudn out that I have actually lost 1 Kilo in the last week, dispite all the food i have been eating. I think it has something to do with all my walking I have done in China, and the absense of overly processed foods here in China. Either way. Thank you very much for all your advice. I will try to find some chinese friends to eat with next time. Do any of you have advice on how I can meet chinese friends?

I am a local Chinese, I found it surprise one day when I saw a bunch of Americans eating next to my table in my favorite restaurant in Guilin. Every one ordered one dish, some ordered 2 for themselves, but ONLY FOR ONE PERSON (the person who ordered the right dish), one ordered a big bower of soup, one ordered a big bower of rice, another one ordered a big plate of vegetables…… and every was eating their own thing, they are not putting their food in the middle of the table for sharing like most of our Chinese do, how strange? How boring to eat single dish at a meal? Why not put them together on the lazy susan for sharing? We can share food, even 4kuai fast food, this makes our meal so fun!

Haha I can't help but respond once again, I was the one who responded previously about the brass in your pockets!  I've been learning alot about China the last few weeks, but I'm still not experienced with living there... but you mean to say that you forgot that a 5 kilo bag was on your back?? That's a rather heavy bag dude ;) haha just jokes...  peace.
