Just came home from a wonderful trip to China on my own. I got positive suggetions here month ago about the time to travel Tibet.
Thanks to everybody here and a few more of folks out there for offering so many helpful suggestions and tips. They made the trip easy and enjoyable at a leisurely pace. As well, the Potola Palace is even more beautiful after the 55th anniversary  of Tibet. The weather is much more better than I assumed. Anybody who would like to be there in the near future are welcome to put questions in this forum.
Cheers

Hi, Robert, thank you so much! I am planning a trip there some time next year. I would like to do it alone and maybe your experience is most helpful to me. My questions are can a Tibet Travel Permit be obtained without buying a tour? Can I buy a China Southwest Air flight Chengdu-Lhasa from outside China so I do not have to stay in Chengdu to purchase a ticket? What travel company did you use? Any camp base there? Thank you in advance!

Wow, I would like to share any experience that helpful. Permit: You do not have to buy a tour when entering from mainland China. Well, as far as I know, it is easy to get a tibet permit when you hold a China Visa. All kinds of people can get Tibet permit through a travel agency except diplomats, journalists, and government officials who should travel to Tibet under the arrangement by the Foreign Affairs Office of Tibet Government. You just send the following information to a travel agency, gender, full name, nationality, passport and visa copies. Please note that everything should be started 10 days earlier. The Chinese officials do not work at the weekend. I suffered from their working pace. Tickets: of course you can not get outside of China because you need to buy your permit first. Why not have this arranged by a travel agency as well? There are many travel can arrange it. I only have travel permit arranged by China Highlights Travel. You can try them as well.

Hi, Randy I am proud to say that I got alcimate to the altitude soon. The possible reasons are: I took bus not flight; Do a lot of preparation months ago, I mean exercise to keep fit; Also follow the instructions that my local guide gave. Weather is fine, you can see from of my pic took in Lhasa!

Hi, thanks for so much information for travelling to Tibet, and i also intend to be there next year, here is the expereince from one of freinds who just came back from China concerning to the permit to Tibet, hope it would useful to share. It is a global travel, and he preferred to design his trip by himself, as well as Tibet, so he applied the permit to Lhasa from the travel agency in Katmandu with group visa only for the one couple, , but when he left Lhasa and would like to stay longer in China, the Officer told him the group visa could not been extended, finally he have to shorten his planner, travelled to next destintation. Maybe before we go, we should double check with our travel agency
