[:)]I am looking at taking my two adult children to China in August 06. We want to travel from Shanghai to Xian then on to beijing. Maybe by overnight train(soft sleeper)and then by air. But the prices to book in NZ seem high. Will we be able to get cheaper tickets once we arrived or will we have problems getting the train and air tickets at short notice.

you'd better have everything arranged in advance. train tickets are in high demand with the chinese travelers and you probably have problem to get any at short notice. usually flight tickets are much easier to get, but still can not guranteen. anyway, arrange them in advance will save you a lot of hussle. have a good trip

You may consider book your flights ticket online beforehand. China's railway system only allow to sell train ticket three days in advance. you probabaly have some trouble to get your train tickets as august are peak season here and train tickets are in high demand. but you can book them through a local travel agency when you are in China.
