ATM matters in China

Does anyone know about the current availability of ATM's in China? We will  be in Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and some areas in southwest of China---It is easy to find one in Lijiang, Golmud?

In the above mentioned cities, you'll readily find ATMs in Beijng, Xian and Shanghai. These are among the most advanced cities in China. Golmuc is also no problem, but I am not sure Lijiang. In the countryside and smaller towns I've heard that there are incresing numbers of ATMs, but I wouldn't count on finding one.

Thanks, but in what denominations do the ATM's typically dispense currency? Will I get small enough denominations to use for small purchases, tips etc. without running into the 'I don't have change for your bill' problem? I don't want to end up with only large value notes. Or am I worrying unnecessarily?

ATMs will give you currency in 100, however, you can make changes at any bank counters or hotel's reception.

I usually get local currency at the airport I land at.  Does anyone know whether there are ATM's (which will accept Cirrus) at Beijing and/or Shanghai ?

I have been told that you would probably had problems finding ATMs in Tibet. Is that really so?

yes, catherine, the fact is that ATMs are not widely available in Tibet and their use should be avoided, for they at times can not work properly.
