I just returned from a trip to Yunnan and may provide some useful reminders to you. The most impressive scene is the stuningly natural scenery: pure water, blue sky, snow mountains rather than the highly advertised ethnic groups. The great difference in weather between morning, evening and midday may makes you feel uncomfortable. I was there in October. It was very cold in the early morning and at night and i felt frozen even in my thick overcoat. But you only need a T-shirt at midday. Be cautious of some scams. Some restaurants at the old town of Lijiang may rip off travelers by offering them a very expensive menu. Actually they have two menus one for the locals and the other for strangers. The street vendors and "street tour guide" are really pushing and persistent. They are waiting at the airport or station exit and cosely follow you offering you their services including car rent, hotel logding, guide service. English is very less used. Away from Kunming. the capital city, almost all the street signals are only writtin in Chinese and it really hard to find someone who can speak englsih. All the public toilets charge 0.5 yuan per/person per time no matter how dirty they are. Boarding in Kunming airport is in chaos. It is not hard for you to take a wrong flight in the disordered situation.
Anyway, the scenery around the region is really superlative.
