I visited Yunnan in west China last month and found the area very impressive, completely different from other part of China. I traveled Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and would like to share my feeling on each place.
Kunming: The city itself is not interesting at all, big, messy but I like the Longmen Cave in the West Hill. This is a group of grottoes, Buddhist scultures which were hacked from the sheer cliff. The small path along the outer cliff edge is so narrow that only one or two people can squeeze by at a time. I was a bit irritated by the jabbering Chinese tourist groups. The ethnic village is very big and an ideal place for a leisure stroll with a vista of greenery dotted with various ethnic houses.
Dali: a gorgeous place, so clear, pure and the people very friendly. The local culture and many ways of life are still as they were for many hundreds of years. The city nestling at the foot of the Cangshan Mountain along the Ehai Lake is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in China. The Erhai lake like a huge turquoise glittering under the pure, blue sky.
Lijiang: Lijiang has some bearthtaking natural beauty, snow mountains, deep gorges.
