We are a family of 4 and going to China in mid December. Should we buy our tickets from Kunming to Changmai, Thailand before we leave the states or wait until we get to Kunming to get the cheapest price?

Hmm, that is a hard question to answer! You may have the chance to buy cheap tickets at the last minutes, but you are risking of not being able to buy any tickets unless your schedule to Changmai is flexible. Wish you will be able to get a cheap deal in the states.
