Shamian Island is the colonial area developed in 1843 by the British. From the 18th to the mid 19th century, it is the only place where foreign traders were permitted to set up their warehouses and factories- a reminder of Guangzhou's colonial history. Now it is connected to the rest of the city by a series of bridges. The architecture is very European, especially some beautiful Catholic churches. The park area along the river is a great place for sightseeing. Walk along the wide sidewalks and enjoy a meal in the open-air under the old trees, this will leave you with a nice memory. It is also a place for local people to relax and enjoy their leisure life.
