Po Lin Monastery, at the western end of Lantau Island, is the major Buddhist retreat in Hong Kong. Originally built by three monks in 1924, many structures have been added over the years. The monastery has served as a Buddhist retreat. The 34-meter high big bronze Buddha standing beside the monastery is the largest one in the world. The pedestal of the Buddha is a three-story exhibition hall. A huge clock inside this hall struck every 7 minutes and 108 times a day, symbolizing the dispelling of 108 vexations.

St. John's Cathedral on the Garden Road is the first Christian church built in Hong Kong. It served as the headquarters of the Japanese army after its invasion during World War II. Having dominated the colony's landscape when erected in 1849, the church is now lost in the forest of high rises around it, but its prestige and spirit remain an important part of Hong Kong..
