Hi Morris, I think its the best way to Guangzhou as you said, and the very end of CRH train is 22:00, and in case you miss the CRH train, you can also take rail car until 22:50.

Hi Catherine, the weather of April in North of China may be cold sometimes, but i check the weather forecast, and the weather in Beijing and Chengde is not cold this month, it is about 18°C on average. Now it is the time of blooming in most places of China, you can't miss it. If you want to buy some some souvenir, Ni Ren Zhang (clay-figurine Zhang) recommended.
