The Terracotta army lay hidden for 2000 years?before local farmers uncovered some pottery while digging a well in 1974. Excavation of the earth and timber vaults revealed thousands of?life size Terracotta figures. The first formal excavation of the site lasted from 1978 to 1984 and uncovered 1,087 clay figures.
