Hi Michael,
As for the best tour guide during the trip, very hard to choose between Kevin in Beijing or Cindy in Xian. Both were exceptional and their linguistic skills were such that we could joke with them. It was like being with friends. Also their knowledge was extremely good and passed on without having to think.
The light show in Yangzhou is a must and should be part of the tour also the Mutianyu great wall is far better than badaling as there were fewer people.
The lunches were great use the local, as we did, not the tourist restaurants. I have been going to China on business for about 30 years and taken people to the great wall, forbidden city and the terracotta warriors many times. I learnt more on this trip than all the other years combined.
