Hi Candy,
Our favorite guides are Lily and Johnny, some of our group prefer one, some the other one. but both were outstanding.
I think guides made mush of the difference. They took care of us really well. Lily had umbrellas for us waiting in the morning, she bought enough for all of us. renting from the hotel would be more expensive. She walked around Yangshuo to find a laundry shop that will clean our clothes fast enough, or found places to buy apple juice for the baby(same for Johnny).
Lily taught us few Chinese sayings and was checking on us and kids if they remembered that. at the end of the day we had an overview of the day - that was entertaining and useful.
Johnny was very patient with the fact that we had kids and older people on our tour. we didn't feel pressure from him, and at the same time we moved pretty fast to pass huge crowds in Beijing. I'm surprised that nobody got lost.
He allowed as sit and relax and then move fast to pass crowds. His was walking china history guide. that was impressive.
We would definitely recommend China Highlights to our friends for the excellent guides. All logistic was perfect.
