Hi Michael,
We had a great time, and have been cheerfully recommending the trip to others. Having started in Urumqi, the hotels steadily got better. We much appreciated the Turpan hotel, with its vast and underused swimming pool, and also the location in the heart of things; while the romantic feel of the Dun Huang hotel comepensated for being a little out of town.
The guides were all admirable. Helen Zhang was the most anxious of the three, which made her a bit too inclined to advance her agenda and to take a while to hear what we were saying. Mohammadali was the most interesting character we met, and we learned much from him, while Chris Chan in Xi’an was the most sophisticated and professional of the three.
An unexpected highlight in Xi’an was to ride around the city wall on bikes.
