There were so many memorable parts of the trip e.g. learning calligraphy in Xian, walking the Tiger Leaping Gorge (and especially the gorge itself). But we particularly enjoyed Yangshuo. I enjoyed the boat ride from Guilin to Yangshuo and the cycle ride around the Countryside around Yangshuo, watching the men on their bamboo rafts and the unique landscape of the karst mountains.
We had an excellent trip to China. Thanks you for all your help.
All our guides were great. It would be difficult to choose the best, but we found Jack in Beijing, Jason in Xian and Jenny in Yangshuo were all particularly good. They all had a huge amount of knowledge, were professional and flexible and had good English language skills.
All the drivers managed to cope with the busy traffic and manic drivers, and they all managed to get us to our destinations in one piece.
Most hotels were acceptable. Sometimes we found that the air conditioning didn’t work and other maintenance was lacking. Sometimes facilities were advertised as being available, e.g. sauna, gym, swimming pool, but when we ventured out to use the facilities, they weren;t available. There was a hiccup when the second day of walking the tiger leaping gorge, was much quicker than advertised and we arrived very early at Ha Ba snow mountian guesthouse. The Guesthouse was very poor and within a ‘building site’. Thankfully our guide and driver were very flexible and took us to Shangri La instead which was a better outcome for us all. The hotel - Holiday Inn Express Beijing Minzuyuan was excellent with lovely outlook for breakfast ( considering we were in a busy city). By far the best hotel was the Regal Airport Hotel in Hong Kong.
We enjoyed many great meals. One meal that stood out as being particularly good was at the Real Love; restaurant in Xian. I also remember great meals on the tiger leaping gorge walk – lunch at the Naxi family home and food at the Half way Inn.
The cruise was excellent. I remember the food was pleasant enough. It was interesting that they tried to sell us dishes before we were about to sit down to a buffet meal which was pre-paid.
The tiger leaping gorge was quite impressive, as was Emeishan, as we emerged from the mist into blue sky at the top of the mountain. We couldn’t help be impressed by the scale of the terracotta warriers and the massive stone carvings of the yungang grottos. The great wall was also very impressive but slightly hidden in the haze. The hanging monastery near Datong was very impressive. We enjoyed the trips to the park in the morning to see the old people doing tai chi, and in the evenings, families dancing in the squares. The light show in Yangshuo was spectacular.
We had an excellent trip. We found it to be a great insight into the culture , history, geography and people. We found that having a private tour was definitely the best way to go. It takes the stress out of the holiday. No need to worry about how to get from A to B. and with the flexibility to slightly vary the itinerary if necessary.
Yes, definitely, China Highlights were great from planning the itinerary to the holiday itself.
