The Xian trip was outstanding, made especially so by the great guide that we had. She was very knowledgeable and tailored our activities to what we wanted to do plus she matched things with some physical limitations of my brother-in-law. She even had a birthday cake for me at a local restaurant (see attached). Speaking of food, her choices of places to eat was excellent. I do recommend the hotel (Hyatt Regency) as it was very nice and with good service. They even had a little birthday present for me!
For someone wanting a little adventure, I recommend what we did: take the airplane one way to Xian and the train for the return. Part of the China experience is mixing with the local people and this train ride was part of that experience. Some people may not be comfortable doing this, but we thoroughly enjoyed it.
In the evening we had free time and the guide recomended a route that I might walk from the hotel. I personally would rather adventure out on my own a bit in the evening rather than go somewhere that all the tour groups frequent. I enjoyed just walking the streets watching the people. I ended up back near the hotel at a neat brew house that served different kinds of barbecued meats and I thoroughly enjoyed that: http://www.goldenhans.com/.
We did a little shopping with street vendors near the wall. Normally I don't care for shopping as part of a tour, but this was different being with street vendors as it was more like mingling with the local people and not really shopping for anything special.
As you know, I would recommend China Highlights to anyone as you did a great job for me in both Xian and Guilin.
All the best,
