History
The festival has been held annually in the middle of September for more than twenty years since 1990, attracting eight million people to it. It acts as a perfect event for locals and foreigners to discover China's fascinating culture and history. A number of traditional and non-traditional entertainment programs are held, and Shanghai's unique charms and native pleasures are well displayed.
Activities
The festival always begins with a grand Opening Ceremony Parade of floats in a very famous commercial street, Huaihai Road, at night. It's the highlight of the festival, and has always drawn enthusiastic crowds, with great numbers of floats and performing teams from China and other parts of the world taking part.
Visitors can also enjoy a wealth of fun activities, including the Rugby Sevens Championship, the Sailing Carnival, the Festive Boat Parade on the Huangpu River, and the Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival.
