Tonggu Village

Country women drawing a paintingTonggu means bronze drum in Chinese. Tonggu village is located in Xiasi Town, which is 24.3 km east of the county town of Majiang and about 4 km from the Xiasi exit in the Kaili-Majiang Highway. Country road stretches to the village. Tonggu village is known for the paintings that the woman villagers and the children draw. There are tens of Miao women and a hundred children in the village practicing painting. They use liquid powder and they don't use any ruler or other instrument when they draw pictures. Their paintings are mainly about the daily life of common people and are usually exaggerating in describing the typical Miao characteristics and the local feature. The Chinese Ministry of Culture titled the village the "village of modern Chinese folk painting".
