Tai O in Hong Kong, Hong Kong attractionAs the fishing village first developed on Lamma Island, it is honoured as the "Oriental Venice" for the numrous fishing boats and sanpans moored at the tiny harbor.

Since the area is divided into two parts which are linked together by a river, the local people come and go by boat. And people in Tai O live in houses called 'pangwu', the 'bamboo houses' or 'stilt houses', which is very special. The village has a population of 5,500, mainly Hakka.

In the village, there are lots of temples, including War God Temple, Yanghou Temple, Hongsheng Temple, Tianhou Temple and so on. War God Temple has been standing in the village ever since Ming Dynasty. A bronze bell made in 1739 lays in the temple and its roof is decorated with fine earth type fittings. Other attractions are Huatuo Statue and Wealth God Statue. Yanghou Ancient Temple was built to remember Yanghou King, which looks even majestic after mending. Facing the temple are two stone monuments laid to mark the border in 1902 when New Territories was leased. Walk along Tai O Avenue, visitors will see the Kun-yin Temple with a history of 80 years, which style of architechture imitates the Summer Palace in Beijing. Salted fish and shrimp cream are the most famous sea products in Tai O.
