The Forbidden City, located in the center of Beijing, served as the imperial palace from the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). Inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, it is the largest and best-preserved ancient wooden palace complex in the world. It houses the Palace Museum, which has an abundance of significant imperial collections from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These days, the Forbidden City is also called Gugong, meaning the Former Palace.
The Forbidden City is located to the north of Tiananmen Square. To get there, take Beijing subway line 1 and get off at the Tiananmen East stop.
