Kumul (also translated as Hami), is a county-level city of Kumul Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is the seat of the prefectural government, and is famous for its sweet Hami melon. It is the east gateway to Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and was a major stop on the Ancient Silk Road. Kumul borders Mongolian to the north, and is and important land port open to foreign trade in Xinjiang Province.
Kumul Airport serves Kumul city. Since 1934, it has been used by the military, and opened for civilian use in 2008. Currently, the airport has flights to Urumqi, Korla, and Dunhuang.
