Mount Lu Travel Guide
The Lu Mountains are a blend of history, natural scenery and religious culture. The oval-shaped mountains stretch 25 kilometers, spanning 10 kilometers in width, and cover an area of 300 square kilometers. There are more than 19 peaks, of which the Dahanyang Peak is the highest, with an elevation of 1,474 meters.
The Lu Mountains are a popular summer resort thanks to picturesque scenery and cool weather in the summer. Mt. Lu is especially famous for its three supreme sights: the sea of clouds, the waterfalls and the sheer cliffs. Waterfalls on the mountain are particularly well-known due to their clear water and abundant water flow. These waterfalls are mainly supplied by natural precipitation. The humid climate and plentiful rainfall on the mountain all year round ensure that there is enough water for the waterfalls.
In addition to its spectacular natural sights, Mt. Lu is blessed with countless historical relics. Numerous writers, artists and calligraphers from China's past visited Mt Lu for inspiration. Over 4,000 poems and verses have been written in praise the beauty of this famous mountain. The over 900 cliff inscriptions and more than 300 stelae with poems and couplets are testimonies to it's special place in ancient scholars' hearts. Mt. Lu is therefore renowned as a cradle of Chinese landscape painting and of Chinese landscape poetry.
Mt. Lu has served as an important religious site, revered especially by Taoism and Buddhism. Religious temples and pavilions are scattered here and there throughout the mountain. In addition, there are many sites on the mountain established by Confucianists, Christians as well as Muslims.
Mt. Lu was one of the educational centers in China's imperial history. Bailudong Academy (White Deer Cave Academy) is located on its slopes. It is one of the four most famous ancient academies in China, with the other three being Yuelu Academy in Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, in central China's Hunnan Province; Songyang Academy in Songshan Mountain in central China's Henan Province; and Yintian Academy in Nanjing in east China's Jiangsu Province. Bailudong Academy was built in 940.
Mt. Lu has been listed since 1996 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
