Nepalese foods are deeply influenced by Indian and Tibetan cuisine and consequently you can taste a wide variety of food during your stay. International foods from across the globe are particularly represented in restaurants in Kathmandu.
Although traditional Nepalese foods are often described as ‘bland’, Nepalese cuisine is absolutely healthy and extremely nourishing.
Famous Nepalese Cuisine
Dhal Bhat Tarkari
Dhal Bhat Tarkari is one of the most popular Nepalese foods, and it is made of a type of lentil soup knows as dhal, rice (bhat), and curried vegetables (tarkari). Bhat is a staple Nepalese food. It is delicious and soft, and it is very nourishing.
Gundrook-Dheedo is popular with Nepali people and foreign tourists, it is a sugar-free dish made of wheat, corn and dried green vegetable. The food is high on nutrition level and satisfies the taste buds as well.
Aloo Tama (Alu Tama) means 'Potato Bamboo Shoots', which is a unique and special Nepali curry flavor dish. It is unique in the sense that it is unlike any other Indian or South Asian curry since they rarely use bamboo shoots. Similarly, unlike other East Asian cuisine such as Chinese that uses Bamboo shoots but do not use curry spices.
Vegetable Pulao (Fried Nepali Rice) is one of the popular ways rice is served during the parties or events in the Nepalese household. It has flavor of turmeric and cumin to it. The rice is particularly famous among tourists who prefer eating it with curd and Manchurian.
Vegetable Thukpa (Egg Noodles)
This is a seasonal dish. Tibetan Vegetable Thukpa is one of the main food. During Tibetan New Year Celebration 'Losar' the dish is a part of celebration and tradition for the Nepalese.
