2013 Xichang Torch Festival Shines Ethnic Luster on August
Xichang Torch Festival will begin on July 31, 2013, in Liangshan Nationality Culture and Art Center and Torch Square, Xichang, in southwest China's Sichuan Province. The festival will last one month, till August 30.
Xichang is one of the major locales of Yi people. The torch festival is the largest and most important festival for the Yi. It is held every summer, and has a history of more than 1,000 years, attracting numerous domestic and foreign tourists to appreciate it.
Themed "cool summer; burning passion torches", this year's Torch Festival will feature activities of four categories: tourism, culture, sports, and trade, totaling 44 activities with rich and colorful contents.
The torch festival will open with a grand evening gala on July 31. Various traditional activities will be held during the festival, including an Yi beauty contest, traditional wrestling, the “daughter of the moon” selection contest, bull fighting, Qionghai Lake Cycling Race, and the torch carnival — the most important and wonderful part of the festival.

How to get there: Take a half-day train journey from Kunming, Chengdu, or Chongqing to Xichang (西昌). Then take bus 6 from Xichang Railway Station to Mingdian Street (名店街), and transfer to bus 14, 105, or 106 to Torch Square.
