The 27th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival Kicks Off

The 27th China Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival kicks off today (January 5, 2011) in Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province, and it will last to February 17, 2011 (which is the Chinese Lantern Festival in 2011).

The opening ceremony will be held in the Grand World of Ice and Snow at 19:00, January 5, and the three scenic spots themed on ice and snow will show visitors with ‘Disney World’ made by ice and snow in the Grand World of Ice and Snow, colorful ice lantern artistic show in Zhaolin Park and the splendid exhibition for snow sculptures in the Sun Island Scenic Area.

During the festival, hundreds of activities related to snow and ice in five fields (which are art, culture, sports, tourism and trade) will be held. Besides those regular annual activities (like skiing, snow sculpture competition), an international snow marriage ceremony, a snow film festival, a winter swimming competition, International Ice Hockey Invitational Tournament and Asian League Ice Hockey Match. In addition, the first Chinese Baroque Festival will be held and lasts from January 7 to January 21. During the period, some famous sections of Beijing opera, special performance of folk music, concert of light music, shadow puppet plays and Chinese folk art forms will be performed. Harbin is a city located in Northeast China, and it is severely cold there recently with the temperature is almost under -10° C (14° F) and the minimum temperature is as low as -26° C (about -15° F). Hence, visitors need to wear enough clothes to protect themselves from the wintry climate and have the most enjoyments during their visiting in Harbin.
