The First Train Successfully Arrived in Lhasa

Passengers on the trainA train carrying about 600 passengers from Golmud, northwest China's Qinghai Province, arrived at the Lhasa Railway Station at 00:31 AM on Sunday, marking the end of a maiden train run on Qinghai-Tibet Railway which was opened Saturday morning.

The train, coded "Qing 1", left Golmud at 11:05 AM on Saturday and arrived at the destination-Lhasa Railway Station after around 14 hours’ journey across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Those on board the first train included role models of builders of the railway, representatives from the government, journalists from official media. Passengers on the train not only enjoyed beautiful landscape during the trip, but also got moved by warm-heartedness of Tibetans. A lot of local ethnical farmers and herdsmen waved their hands to greet people on the train while they were waiting along the railway to watch the train passing by.

Some travelers suffered altitude sickness but they all recovered soon after receiving treatment on board.

For years, the mystical Tibet has been regarded as one of the hardest accessible area for tourists. In the past, this remote region could only be reached by expensive air travel or rough highway, which restrained many lovers of Tibet from experiencing this area. The Opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will put an end of this situation. It provides more choices and convenience to those who want to explore Tibet.

The Chinese government now is considering building three more railways in Tibet as extensions of the newly-completed railway, which would link Lhasa, with Nyingchi to the east, and Shigatse to the west, while the third will link Shigatse with Yadong, a major trading town on the China-India border.
