Mogao Buddhist Caves to limit visitors

The Mogao Buddhist Caves in Northern China's Gansu Province are considering following the practice of the Tibet's Potala Palace to limit the number of the travelers daily so as to avoid possible damage to the caves caused by being overvisited from next year.

According to researchers from the Dunhuang Researching Institute, the average daily travel arrival during the peak season from May to October currently is about 5.000, around 2000 surpassing the proper reception capacity of 2,900 person daily.

The carbon dioxide exhaling by human lingering within these caves will increase the relative humidity and temperature inside, which will probably erode the cave murals. Although the affections may not be noticeable or found in short time, they certainly exist.

Mogao Caves see increasingly more travelers in recent years with over 200.000 visitors yearly. Experts expect that the number of travelers will keep hiking in the next few years to 50,000 yearly.

The Dunhuang Researching Institute, administration of the attraction has taken measures to split the travel groups to 10 different itineraries, each covering 10 of the 50 opened caves.
