Chaoyang National Geopark of Ancient Organism Fossil to Open at the End of September

A national geopark of ancient organism fossil will open at the end of September in Chaoyang city, Liaoning Province, the land of ancient organism fossil famous all over the world. The geopark will display not only 1,000 pieces of fossil but also the scene of excavation with an area of 12,000 square meters.

The left part of the geopark is a sunk stratigraphic section exhibition hall, which is rarely seen in China. Deeper in the hall a fossil named “fish dances in the water” appears under the glass floor. Stepping forward tourists will see fossils of Protopsephurus, Catbayornis yandica, Lycoptera, Jinanichthys, etc. They all keep the same shape as they were 100 million years ago.

According to the staff of the geopark, villagers of Shangheshou village undesignedly discovered these fossils when they dug the field in 1999, and experts of Chinese Academy of Sciences entered to the scene in 2000 and excavated many precious fossils of fish, birds, reptiles, etc. These fossils were formed probably in the Cretaceous period, more than 100 million years ago.
