Projects to Save Tibetan Relics to Be Completed

The on-going maintenance projects for the Potala Palace, the Norpu Lingka Palace and the Sakya Monastery, three major historical sites in the Tibet Autonomous Region has progressed smoothly and the Shol Village in the Potala Palace is scheduled to open to the public on May 1st.

Up to now, the renovation project for main ancient buildings of Potala Palace and reparation for 17 ancient buildings including White Palace (administerial building) and Red Palace (religious building) have been largely completed, and a rebuilding program for Treasure Hall will conclude before July, according to Cultural Relics Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, a renovation project to repair collapsed walls and ancient buildings such as Galsang Phodrang Palace of Norbu Linkag, Gyianse Phodrang Palace and Daain Myingquelin Phodrang Palace (Eternally Unchanging Palace, also called New Summer Palace) has been completed, so does mural conservation project.

The Potala Palace, built in the seventh century AD, has been added to the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Situated on the western outskirts of Lhasa, Norbu Linkag was built in 1751 and served as the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. The Sakya Monastery is renowned for its many sutra manuscripts.

These three major sites have been undone repairing sine June 2002, with funds of 330 million yuan (US$40.69 million) from the central government.

Since the 1980s, the central government and Tibet Autonomous Region government have granted more than 300 million yuan( us$ 36 million) for saving more than 1400 monasteries and temples as well as cultural relics, with the purpose of protecting these important historic buildings in a timely and effective way.
