Record storms hit Chongqing in Southwest China

Southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality has been struck by record heavy rains since July 14th with flights disrupted and tourist attractions closed.

More than 27 flights have been delayed and over 5,000 passengers stranded at the city's Jiangbei Airport on last Tuesday. Around 15 flights from Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen were redirected to airports at the neighboring Guiyang in Guizhou Province and Chengdu in Sichuan Province.

Some tourist attractions were forced to be closed because of the ferocious landslides and mud-flows triggered by the torrential rainfall. On 12th, 22 tourists were held within the flood-isolated Heishan Valley when they were traveling in the area and were successfully rescued minutes later.

The local tourism administration ordered closes of the Geyueshan Martyr Mausoleum and Ciqikou Ancient Town fearing of further injuries. Numerous road collapses along have made passage to the North Hot Spring impossible and power cut in the Zhangguan Water Cave in north of the city ceased any tourist activities into the cave.

Around 87 buildings have collapsed and more than 65 landslides were reported in the city's tourist areas, which caused a direct loss of 53,790,000 RMB yuan.

Most of the city's tourist attractions remain open to travelers and keep unaffected and more importantly, the Yangtze Cruise starting or terminating in Chongqing is able to operate normally.
