Xishuangbanna Water Splashing Festival, New Year in the Dai people’s calendar, is to be held from April 13 to 16 in 2013. It is the grandest ceremonial occasion for the Dai, and is similar to Thailand’s Songkran.

Festival Activities

On that day, Dai people will splash water on each other to celebrate the New Year, and wish happiness and health to each other. It is believed that being splashed will bring good luck, and the more water one is splashed with, the bigger the blessing.

Activities during the festival will also include dragon-boat racing, launching gaosheng (a kind of mini rocket), throwing love pouches, and folk art performances.

Xishuangbanna Tourism

Xishuangbanna, one of the more notable tourist areas of China, is famous for its splendid tropical rain forest and unique ethnic customs. The annual Water Splashing Festival is the major tourist draw for Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna, attracting numerous domestic and foreign travelers every year.
