Shannan Prefecture is known as the Birthplace of Tibetan Civilization. It lies to the south of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangpo River, and enjoys a comparatively mild climate. The prefecture covers an area of around 80,000 square kilometers, with an average altitude of about 3600m and a total population of 320,000, including mostly Monba, but also Tibetan, Han, Hui and Lhoba people. Shannan is the most prosperous and oldest part of Tibet. The well-known Tubo Regime (a historic period in Tibetan history) was derived from the agricultural civilization in Shannan. Shannan was the origin of the Tibetan civilization and became the ruling center twice in Tibetan history.Read More »
