Shannan Prefecture is known as the Birthplace of Tibetan Civilization. It lies to the south of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangpo River, and enjoys a comparatively mild climate. The prefecture covers an area of around 80,000 square kilometers, with an average altitude of about 3600m and a total population of 320,000, including mostly Monba, but also Tibetan, Han, Hui and Lhoba people.
