Day 1: Arrive in Beijing

Your personal guide and driver will meet you at the airport, making sure your holiday gets to a smooth start.

Day 2: Beijing Classic Sites and Hutong

Today your guide will show you the classics of Beijing, see the iconic sights, such as Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.
Ride a rickshaw and visit a local family to get a more personal experience of Hutong, a maze of historic alleyways and single storey traditional courtyard houses.
Afterwards walk on the Silver Ingot Bridge (Yinding Bridge) and soak in the atmosphere.
Our choice for your lunch is authentic Sichuan cuisine in traditional Chinese style decor.
After dinner there is a chance to see the Kungfu Show, the guide can assist you in arranging tickets.

Day 3: The Great Wall Tour
The Mutianyu Great Wall, Beijing

See the Great Wall in Mutianyu, a much less-crowded section, where a cable car takes you up to avoid a very steep climb. Peek through the watch towers, and imagine you’re on lookout. You can return by cable car, walk down or walk along the wall for about an hour to descend by chairlift.
The nearby lunch is a countryside style, specialties include rainbow trout, sturgeon and salmon. If you’re interested in crafts you might like to ask your guide to visit Beijing’s blue cloisonné workshop, discovering how this fine enamel on a copper base is made.
Visit the Temple of Heaven, where emperors of old prayed for a good harvest and where local people now practice Tai chi and fly kites, is an impressive complex surrounded by a beautiful park. You can join in and fly a kite of your own. If you prefer, this can also be arranged on the Great Wall or Tiananmen Square day. As always with China Highlights you’re in control of the vacation.
The famous Beijing roast duck awaits for dinner, your guide will show you how to savor it according to Chinese customs.

Day 4: Beijing: Zoo and Water Amusement Park and flight to Xian

The kids don’t need to wait any longer to see the pandas; Beijing Zoo has many wild and rare animals from China, among them some adorable pandas.
Spend the rest of the morning having fun at the Water Magic Cube Amusement Park, used during the Beijing Olympics for aquatics and now open to the public. This is good way to escape the heat of summer and your kids will love it!
At lunch time you get to taste the very popular cuisine of the Hakka minority group, and later in the day we take you to the airport for your flight to Xian, escorting you all the way to the gate.

Day 5: Xi’an: The Terracotta Army, Bike Ride on the City Wall

Show your children where archeology comes to life: the Terracotta Army and the underground pits where they were found. An interesting museum and film deepen the experience. Did you know that each soldier has a unique face and were painted in vivid colors? Our guides are on hand to unravel the mysteries and stories and bring history alive.
After enjoying some Hunan and Sichuan cuisine, get some exercise in the day with a bike ride on the Xian City Wall, one of the oldest and most complete city defenses still around. There are also ramparts, gates and watchtowers in abundance. If the weather is not good, we will substitute this with a visit to the Bell Tower.

Day 6: History and Dumplings and Fly to Shanghai

Shaanxi History Museum is one of the best in China; even the buildings themselves are beautiful. Your guide will make sure you get the best of the experience, as some of the information is only available in Chinese.
Dumplings are very popular dish all over China, and at lunchtime your family can learn how to make these mouth wateringly good little morsels, and then eat their creations.
The elegant Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of the main attractions in the Xian city center, and it truly makes a wonderful silhouette against the sky.
Our guide and driver will take you to the airport for a flight to Shanghai.

Day 7: Shanghai: New and Old in Harmony
Tour to Yuyuan Garden

The Shanghai of new and old combine today. Shanghai World Financial Center has the tallest observation deck in the world, whereas the City God Temple and Yuyuan Gardens were built during the Ming dynasty. A market street near Yuyuan Garden is an exciting experience, the crowds of people all buying local snacks, handicrafts, antiques and souvenirs. Lunch is Old Shanghai style food in beautiful surroundings.
In the afternoon you take a walk along the Bund by the Huangpu River, where the old European style buildings give you an overview of the history of colonial Shanghai architecture in an enjoyable way.
In the evening you can choose to see the Shangcheng Acrobatic Show, a famous Chinese troupe.

Day 8: Shanghai Real Life Experience

Stop being a tourist, immerse into the culture and experience the real life of the Shanghai people. Enjoy a lunch and chat with locals in their home, visit the local food market and even learn how to speak some Shanghainese.

Day 9: Depart Shanghai

Our guide and driver will look after you until that last wave at the gate; they make sure you get on your flight on time and unstressed.
