Day 2: Discover the Yellow Mountains and Chengkan Ancient Village
yellow mountains

After finishing your Western breakfast at the hotel, you will commence your tour of Chengkan Ancient Village. About 40 km (25 mi) from the Yellow Mountains, Chengkan is noted for its representative ancient architecture of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasty. In a bird’s eye view, twisted lanes, ancient drainage systems, and high walls create a maze-like layout. With our experienced guide, who has loads of information, you learn how the village was built and functioned hundreds of years ago.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant to give you a chance to taste authentic Anhui dishes. Then to the Yellow Mountains. Your guide will prepare drinks and a map to maximize your time in Huangshan.

It takes about 1 hour to get to the foot of the Yellow Mountains. You will take a cable car to ascend to the 'Back Hills', where the essence of the Yellow Mountains is located. Don't miss the magnificent scenery along your 10-minute cable car journey. You will start to hike and sightsee from Beginning-to-Believe Peak, which is renowned for peculiar-shaped pine trees and rocks.

1. Our guide’s insider knowledge means you will be on the best routes with the best views. Visiting the Yellow Mountains in reverse (from the ‘Back Hills’ to the ‘Front Hills’) is highly recommended.
2. The seas of cloud and the sunsets are highlights of the Yellow Mountains. If the weather is nice, your private guide will guide you to the best places to enjoy these wonders.
3. We recommend letting your tour guide arrange storage of your not-needed luggage, and preparing a light pack for exploring the mountains.

Day 3: The Yellow Mountains and Flying Snow Hot Spring

Sunrise on the Yellow Mountains: You will need to be an early bird, if the weather is nice, and you plan to see the sunrise over the Yellow Mountains. Your guide will tell you when and where, and offer local insider tips.

After enjoying the sunrise, you will go back to your hotel and have breakfast. Then you will walk to the ‘Front Hills’, taking in more Yellow Mountain wonders, including 'Welcoming Guest Pine', which is undoubtedly the most famous tree in China. After lunch on the mountain, you will walk to a cable car station and descend.

Flying Snow Hot Spring is at the foot of the Yellow Mountains. There are various pools with different scents and healing properties: rose, lavender, jasmine, green tea, red wine, milk, coffee, etc. Don’t forget to try the fish pool and enjoy little fishes nibbling and cleaning your skin. It’s a perfect way to refresh and recover after hiking on the mountain. (Note: If you come in summer or not care for hot spring, we are happy to adjust the itinerary according to your needs.)

Tunxi Ancient Street: After that you will be transferred to Tunxi Ancient Street (about a one-hour drive), which is regarded as a living “Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival” (a famous Chinese painting). There you can leisurely walk among the ancient buildings and look around to grab a bargain. Have your dinner in a Chinese restaurant serving Anhui cuisine and Hangzhou cuisine.

Two hours before your boarding time, sit back and relax as your private driver and guide get you to the airport. They will take you right to check-in and say goodbye at the security gate.

You will be supplied with towels, shower gel, shampoo, hair dryers, brushes, flip flops, and lockers at the hot spring. All you need to bring is your swimsuit.

1. Is it OK to visit the Yellow Mountains in winter, as I read it can be slippery with snow?

The top of the Yellow Mountains will be covered with snow from December to early March. The mountains will turn into a winter wonderland and it’s the best time to see seas of clouds. You can have a safe trip as long as you make good preparation.
Please prepare warm clothes and antiskid snow boots. You can purchase crampons (recommended for the iciest steps) for about CNY20 (US$4) and walking poles for about CNY10 (US$2) at the foot of the mountain.

2. What are the other options instead of the hot springs?
If you would like to see a historical and cultural site, the Tangyue Memorial Arches at She Xian are recommended for their Ming and Qing dynasty (1368–1911) residential architecture and memorial arches.
If you are love natural scenery, we can arrange a hike along the Ten-Mile Picturesque Corridor of the Xin’an River. Your travel expert is happy to adjust the itinerary based on your interests, and offer more ideas.
