Lanzhou
An important stop along the Silk Road, Lanzhou is an ancient city with about 2,000 years of history. Lanzhou may pleasantly surprise visitors with some of its grand sights, including Green Corridor along Binhe Road, five Spring Mountain, and White Pagoda Mountain.
Festivals list:
Silk Road Festival(Oct. 31-Nov. 10, 2006): Established in 1992, held once every year since then. During the festival, the special Dunhuang tour starts from Lanzhou along the foot of Qilian Mountain to the west, through Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuquan and Jiayuguan, and finally arrived in Dunhuang. Although this trip is only a small part of the ancient Silk Road, wherever the tour extends travelers can enjoy the spectacular scenery alongside. The festival also attracts tourists from abroad.
Lanzhou Mill Wheel Festival(Jul. 1-Jul. 31, 2006): Lanzhou Water Wheel Festival starts with a grand opening ceremony. Flags with Waterwheel Festival logo, colorful balls, drums and local music are indispensable elements in the ceremony. The huge waterwheels in the exhibition are slowly rotating while the local band is singing with high-pitched melody at the river bank. In addition, a whole row of sheepskin rafts flow downward on the broad surface of the Yellow River. The whole scene forms a unique picture of the western China scenery.

Jiayuguan International Gliding Festival(Jul. 15-Jul. 18, 2006): Jiayuguan Pass International Gliding Festival is held annually at Jiayuguan Pass Gliding Base, Gansu Province from July 15-18. Activities include gliding contests and flight training are arranged. And silver, gold and diamond flight certificates are granted. Tourists may experience this unique activity under the direction of the pilots and enjoy the mystical colors of the vast Gobi Desert and the splendor of the snow sceneries of Qilian Mountains. Turpan
Turpan in the Uygur language means red rocks, and got its name from the dark red sandstone dominating the area. Despite its harsh condition Turpan is nationally known for its grapes, cantaloupe and sun dried raisins.

Xinjiang Grape Festival(Aug. 25-Aug. 31, 2006): Grape cultivation in the world-famous city of Turpan dates back to more than 2000 years ago. Of the 100-odd grain strains in Turpan, the seedless white grapes, dubbed “green pearls of China,” are the most precious. The raisin and wine produced in Turpan are known for their lingering good tastes. Most of Turpan’s grapes are grown in the renowned Grape Valley, or “Pearl City in the Desert.” The Xinjiang Grape Festival was first launched in 1990 and has since become an annual event in Turpan.

Formula One(Apr. 17-Apr. 19, 2006): F1 is the abbreviation for Formula 1. In China, it is called the Class One Formula Race. The cars, which are made according to the same formula, are called Formula race. Among those classes, the top one is Formula 1. At present, the popularity of the F1 can be compared with the Olympics and the World Cup. Now there are ten racing teams. Every race, there are 20 drivers attending at most and each year there are 16 to 19 races. The race usually starts on the middle of the March and ends on the end of October. Each race can attract more than one billion audiences seeing it through TV and other mass medium.
The City Temple Fair(Feb. 11-Feb. 13, 2006): The City Temple in Shanghai enjoys a great reputation at home and abroad. It holds a series of temple fairs all year round due to the large number of temples and deities. Around the fifteenth day of the first month in China’s lunar calendar, (the Lantern Festival) each year, all shops and residences near the City Temple will hang ingenious lanterns in diverse shapes, like ingot, cornucopia, boats, lotus, bats, butterflies and toads, made of glass, and other lanterns like revolving scenic lanterns, rabbits, crabs, carps, shells, windmills made of silk or paper. Besides, some riddles will be hung on lanterns. What is more, both performances of “literary lanterns” and “military lanterns” will be held in streets. “Literary lanterns” performance team starts with south Yangzi string and pipe music (traditional stringed and woodwind instruments), followed by colorful paper lanterns with the shape of an umbrella. “Military lanterns” performance team is led by a strong rhythm of drums and gongs
