Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province. was an ancient city on the 'Silk Road' trade route between Europe and China because it is at the entrance of a lowland corridor called the Hexi Corridor. In and around Lanzhou are ancient Buddhist temple sites and shrines. Bingling Temple Grottoes near Lanzhou is the important legacy of centuries of travel and trade on the Silk Road, and the modern city of Lanzhou offers the Gansu Provincial Museum as a travel highlight and modern facilities for a Silk Road tour. - Zhongshan Iron Bridge (30 minutes): The iron bridge was built in the Qing Dynasty and renowned as the "first bridge on the Yellow River under the heaven".
- Waterwheel Garden (20 minutes): There are giant steel and wood, once used to lift precious water from the Yellow River to supply the needs of this dry region. There is also a chance to ride on a raft of inflated sheep skins. It is located on South Binhe East Road, the opposite side of the river from White Pagoda Hill, 1 km west of Zhongshan Bridge.
- White Pagoda Hill (1 hour): It is located on the north bank of the Yellow River in Lanzhou. It is named after the white pagoda on top of it, which was originally erected in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). A half hour climb (that could be shortened by a cable car ride over the Yellow River) offers a great view of Lanzhou and the surrounding mountains.
- Gansu Museum: The Museum houses 75,000 cultural relics, ranging from fossil to articles of historical and heritage significance. More than 110 pieces are rated of first class significance including Gansu color-painted pottery, and bamboo medication slips from the Han era. The most famous piece in the collection from the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) is a bronze Galloping Horse of Wuwei that is accompanied by an impressive array of chariots and carriages.
- Quanshunlou Restaurant: Quanshunlou Restaurant specializes in pasta and roast mutton cooked in the north western style.

- Bingling Thousand Buddha Caves (1 hour): These caves, which stretch for 200 meters, were built during the Western Qin, North Wei, Sui, Tang, and Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties (between the 3rd and 18th centuries). They are highly valued for their contribution to research into the history of Chinese painting, and the spread of Buddhism during that time. From June (sometimes as late as July) to October tourist boats depart daily from the dam to Bingling Si.During winter the water level is too low for boats, and there is no road access. Steps have been built into the rock-face to make is easier to see the caves.
