September the 9th is the traditional Chongyang Festival in China. In Chinese language, “Chong” means double. It is also called Chongjiu (double nine) Festival. The number “9” rhymes with "jiu” (longevity) and double nine is therefore considered a very lucky day. This festival is a celebration of the golden harvest in autumn.
Drinking chrysanthemum wine and eating chrysanthemum cakes are the highlights of this festival. The chrysanthemum flower is often used as a Chinese herb (e.g. in teas) to detoxify the body, and is also believed to ward off evil spirits.
Other activities during this festival include traveling, hiking in the countryside, carrying dogwood sprigs, and enjoying autumn’s last burst of colors before the cold winter sets in.
Today Chongyang has been designated Seniors Day in honor of their contribution to society. On this day, people pay special tribute to them and the seniors go out and enjoy themselves.
