Fenghuang Ancient Town
Fenghuang(Phoenix town) is a town out of time. Hemmed in by rolling mountains and watered by a smoothly flowing river, flagstone streets, rows of traditional wooden houses built on stilts, towers, bridges everywhere, small boats rowed down the river, that's a portrait of Fenghuang. It's an authentic ancient town not too touristy.
Fenghuang is located at the southwest ridge of central China's Hunan Province. The region's terrain drops off in escarpment from northwest to southeast. The highest elevation is 1,117 meters while the lowest elevation is 170 meters. The area has beautiful scenery with undulating mountains and ranges, deep valleys, wooden covered forests and rivers.
Weather & climate
Fenghuang belongs to monsoon climate, warm and humid, with distinctive seasonal changes. The annual average temperature is around 15 centigrade degree.
Attractions
Suspended Houses(wooden houses built on stilts) : The town is filled with such suspended houses with strong Tujia ethnical feature.
Flagstone street: Several flagstone streets crisscross the ancient town. Lining along these streets are the ancient buildings. Walking along these streets is a refreshing relief.
Wenchangge Temple: This temple is dedicated to worshiping Wenchang Star. The temple is ringed by clusters of bamboo and ancient vibrant tress, which yield a feeling of refreshing and relief.
Former Residential House of Shencongwen: at the heart of the town, this courtyard got its fame mainly from its owner, Shencongwen, a notable scholar. 11 small and elegant chambers are in thier original style.
Hotels
Fenghuang has plenty of hotels and hostels but most of them only cater to the domestic tourists. Hotels built along the river offer a good river view. Please keep in mind that the hotel facility can not match the unique scenery and enchantment of that area.
Transportation
The best way to travel to Fenghuang is first to go to Huaihua and then proceed to Fenghuang via bus.
There are trains from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou running via Huaihua and trains from Guiyang, Guangzhou terminating in Huaihua.
