There are two pairs of normal speed trains in service between Beijing and Ulan Bator. K23/K24 arrives/departs at Ulan Bator, and K3/K4 stops over at Ulan Bator to/from Moscow.

Good to Know:

  • Sometimes soft sleepers are not available: on K23, departing on Saturday from Beijing, or on K4, departing on Sunday from Ulan Bator
  • Price might be adjusted. The provided price above is only for your reference. We will keep you informed if there are any changes to the ticket price.
  • A child under 4 years old and accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket is ticket free if they don't occupy individual berths. You don’t need to indicate the child’s information on your ticket. A child between 4 and 12 years old can enjoy a half-price ticket.
  • At Erlian Station, the train will stop for about 3 hours to change the wheels for a different railway line because the railways’ widths are different between China and Mongolia. You can either stay on the train or get off to have a walk around.

It’s good to know that at Beijing Railway Station you need to check-in at least 1 hour before the train’s departure.

Buy Train Tickets Online — the Most Convenient Way

passportValid ID is required when buying a ticket and boarding a train.

Valid ID is required when buying a ticket AND boarding a train:

  • Foreign passengers: passport
  • Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan passengers: Mainland Travel Permit

You are suggested to buy tickets 15 days before your departure.

You are recommended to buy train tickets online with China Highlights’ international train tickets service, providing detailed and helpful English guidance and a 24/7 service. A ticket delivery service is also available.

However, it only sells tickets for trains traveling from China to Mongolia. If you want to buy train tickets for the Mongolia to China direction, you need to buy them at the Mongolian train station.

Do I Need a Visa

To Ulan Bator, Mongolia

You may need to apply for a Mongolia visa if you are going to Ulan Bator. You can apply for it at the Mongolian embassy in your country.

Mongolia has a visa-free agreement with some countries. Please search on your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website to check whether your nationality can enter Mongolia without a visa.

International Train Facilities

Food and Water

There is a restaurant car on board, and conductors sell snacks and drinks by pushing a trolley through the carriages.

You can have a free lunch and dinner on the first day.

When the train stops at a station, you can also get off the train to buy some food at the snack stands on the platform.

There is free boiling water in each carriage. You can take a cup with you and make a cup of coffee or tea.

Air Conditioning

  • Carriages on K23/24 will often have air conditioning.
  • Carriages on K3/4 have no air conditioning. But you can open the window.

Toilet and Shower Facilities

  • K23 train departing on Tuesday: Deluxe soft sleeper compartments are equipped with independent Western-style toilets and a shower cubicle is also available.
  • K23 on Saturday: Two carriages share one Western-style toilet, but there is no shower available.
  • Free toilet paper is available in the toilets but, when it runs out, the conductor may not supply new paper; therefore, take your own toilet paper, just in case.
  • Disposable toiletries are available, but there are no towels.

Recharge Sockets

There are recharge sockets in each carriage but you need to take a converter to be able to recharge your phone and camera. Unfortunately, the voltage is sometimes too low and you may be unable to turn your laptop on. You can ask the conductor for help.

Currency

US dollars and Euros are acceptable on international trains. When you are in China, you can use the Chinese yuan; when you are in Mongolia, you can use the Tugrik. Remember that cash only is accepted.
