There are two pairs of normal speed trains in service between Beijing and Ulan Bator. K23/K24 arrives/departs at Ulan Bator, and K3/K4 stops over at Ulan Bator to/from Moscow.

Getting to Beijing Railway Station

It’s good to know that at Beijing Railway Station you need to check-in at least 1 hour before the train’s departure.
Valid ID is required when buying a ticket AND boarding a train:
You are suggested to buy tickets 15 days before your departure.
You are recommended to buy train tickets online with China Highlights’ international train tickets service, providing detailed and helpful English guidance and a 24/7 service. A ticket delivery service is also available.
However, it only sells tickets for trains traveling from China to Mongolia. If you want to buy train tickets for the Mongolia to China direction, you need to buy them at the Mongolian train station.
You may need to apply for a Mongolia visa if you are going to Ulan Bator. You can apply for it at the Mongolian embassy in your country.
Mongolia has a visa-free agreement with some countries. Please search on your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website to check whether your nationality can enter Mongolia without a visa.
Date and Time of Entry — Erlian Station
When you apply for a visa, regarding the date and time of entry to China, you can refer to the timetable above of Erlian Station at 21:00.

There is a restaurant car on board, and conductors sell snacks and drinks by pushing a trolley through the carriages.
You can have a free lunch and dinner on the first day.
When the train stops at a station, you can also get off the train to buy some food at the snack stands on the platform.
There is free boiling water in each carriage. You can take a cup with you and make a cup of coffee or tea.
There are recharge sockets in each carriage but you need to take a converter to be able to recharge your phone and camera. Unfortunately, the voltage is sometimes too low and you may be unable to turn your laptop on. You can ask the conductor for help.
US dollars and Euros are acceptable on international trains. When you are in China, you can use the Chinese yuan; when you are in Mongolia, you can use the Tugrik. Remember that cash only is accepted.
