Daxu, meaning “big market” in Chinese, is an ancient town with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Located on the north bank of the Li River, about 23 km by river from Guilin, it became one of the four famous ancient towns in Guangxi province as early as 600 years ago. Today, Daxu Ancient Town has continued to thrive, albeit in a downsized mode. A flagstone street, lined with old residences, shops and stalls, runs two kilometers along the riverbank through the town. Along the riverfront stand many well preserved traditional style buildings that date from 100 years ago, which were used as quarters for businessmen in past times.
