Lijiang Ancient Town

The ancient town of Lijiang was built on the flat land at the foot of the Yulong Snow Mountain. It was first established by Naxi people in the Song Dynasty, and has a history of almost a thousand years. Since then, it has been the political, cultural, and educational center of this area. For a time, it was an important trading center for business between Yunnan and Tibet, China and India. The town flourished as a trading post on the Silk Road for tea, known as the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. Merchants from far and wide would travel the route with their horses loaded with tea. In 1997, three ancient districts of the Lijiang urban area were included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
