Famen Temple is located in Fufeng County, around 120 kilometers west of Xi'an City. It wasoriginally built 1,700 years ago. In 1987, a treasure trove was discovered in the temple during renovation. The finds included 4 Buddhist relics, 121 pieces of gold and silverware once used for Buddhist worship in the temple, 400 pieces of colored glass and ceramics, and many pieces of silk given by empresses of the day. The Famen Temple has become a place of pilgrimage as a result of the discovery of what is claimed to be a true relic belonging to Buddha. After constant construction over the last 20 years, the temple is now a grand place of worship.
